The Pool & Hot Tub Council of Canada’s (PHTCC’s) Toronto chapter recently held health and safety training sessions for pool/spa business owners, managers and employees.

More than 30 pool and spa professionals attended the Pool & Hot Tub Council of Canada’s (PHTCC’s) Toronto chapter health and safety training session in March to learn about workplace/job safety and accident prevention.

Held at the Holiday Inn & Suites in Markham, Ont., two training sessions were offered—one for owners/managers and another for employees. Randy Dignard of Industrial Safety Trainers Inc., an independent provider of health and safety programs, consulting and training in Barrie, Ont., led the program for owners/managers. It covered health and safety training as well as a Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) certification session.

“Randy made the dry topic interesting and entertaining and attendees got quite the eye-opener in terms of what it takes to keep employees safe and reduce overall liability,” said Mette Yellowees, Toronto chapter manager.

The second session was led by Bryce Reiter of Mursatt Chemicals in Woodbridge, Ont., and covered WHMIS and Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) certification for employees.

Topics of discussion between both training sessions included the most recent changes in Ontario with regards to health and safety, who the Ministry of Labour is and what powers they have, the legal health and safety duties and responsibilities of a pool/spa business owner/supervisor, what training should be provided to staff, and what to do in the event of an accident.
