The Newfoundland and Labrador government announced in its recent budget an increase in user fees at some provincially operated aquatic facilities.

Fees at three provincially-run swimming pools in Newfoundland and Labrador are set to increase after the recent budget was announced.

According to a report by CBC’s Crosstalk, the pools affected are located in Corner Brook, Gander, and Happy Valley-Goose Bay. Price increases for 20 passes, for example, will go up by $26 for kids (from $14 to $40) and $35 for seniors (from $20 to $55).

One water fitness instructor, Gerry Primm, fears seniors will stop attending classes due to the increased costs. He told CBC’s Crosstalk the fee hikes are short-sighted because swimming provides great exercise and promotes healthy living for seniors, which will alleviate stresses on the healthcare system down the road.

In response, Seniors, Wellness, and Social Development Minister Clyde Jackman defended the increased pricing, stating it puts the provincial pools in line with other community aquatic facilities.

“No one likes fee increases… but if you look at the charges we are putting in place, they’re very comparable—and in many cases are still below what community pools across the province are charging,” Jackman told CBC’sCrosstalk.

According to the report, the government also looked at other options such as reduced facility hours and/or programming, as well as even closing the pools. However, Jackman said the government will see an additional $100,000 annually due to the fee increase, which is needed to operate the pools.
