Pool pump motors recalled due to electrical shock hazard

Nidec Motor Corporation in St. Louis, Mo., has recalled approximately 16,000 variable speed pool pump motors after reports of the pump’s cover not being properly grounded, posing an electrical shock hazard.

Health Canada, in conjunction with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (US CPSC) and Nidec Motor Corporation, issued a joint recall advising consumers to immediately stop using the affected pumps and contact the manufacturer to schedule a free repair by a qualified technician who will install an external ground lead.

The affected pumps have a programmable user interface on the top and have the name ‘Emerson’ or ‘EcoTech EZ’ printed on top of the control box. The model number is printed on the rating plate located on the side of the pump. For a list of the model numbers included in this recall, click here[2].

According to Health Canada’s notice, Nidec Motor Corporation has not received any reports of incidents or injuries in Canada or the United States related to the use of these affected products. The motors were sold from 2010 to October 2016, with 22 units sold in Canada and approximately 16,000 in the U.S.
