The presence of water can create many different emotional responses in people- bringing water inside the home only accentuates and heightens those feelings. This pool, installed by BonaVista Pools Ltd., in Markham, Ont., evokes serenity, reflection and relaxation, while simultaneously representing life, activity and indulgence.
The shotcrete pool which helps set the tone for the entire home and provides the client with a source of daily inspiration, is 4.8 x 13.4 m (16 x 44 ft) and has a gradual depth of 1.1 to 2.6 m (3.6 to 8.6 ft). The waterline is finished with a Mettowee Black Slate (supplied by Acme Slate in Scarborough, Ont.), while black marbelite was used to finish the pool’s interior.
The design satisfies a unique set of challenges that were presented by the client. For example, they wanted a place to exercise; however, the pool area also needed to have a serene, spa-like atmosphere where the homeowner could also spend time relaxing with a good book and a glass of wine.
BonaVista met these challenges in designing the pool, whereby its length achieved the fitness requirements and its gentle, sweeping curves, coupled with the room’s architecture and material selection, set the tone and ambiance for a place of peaceful retreat.
The poolroom itself was an addition to the existing house, which was simultaneously being completely renovated by Chess MacKenzie Associates Ltd.
The south and west walls of the room are made up almost entirely of floor to ceiling windows, which bathes the pool deck in soft natural light throughout the day. The design also incorporated heated floors to ensure the reverie was not interrupted by chilly footsteps when exiting the pool. The stone wall to the east rises from the bottom of the pool, up out for the water and stretches towards the ceiling, tying the pool seamlessly into the surrounding environment.
