Set along the Ottawa River, the locale of this swimming pool project lent itself well to a vanishing edge design. Despite the difficult waterfront location, Roger Willis Contracting, also in Ottawa, met the challenge head on.

For instance, due to the 4.5 m (15 ft) difference in elevation between the client’s backyard and beachfront below, large, natural stones were used to build a retaining wall. Further, to accommodate the needs of the local environmental agencies, the walls of the terrace and 11- x 4.5-m (36- x 15-ft) swimming pool were extended 2.4 m (8 ft) below grade to serve as a second retaining wall to comply with the location being in a flood plain.

The full-length vanishing edge, which blends into the waterscape below, also includes a 2.4-m (8-ft) sheer waterfall along one end to further the unique appeal of the project.

Glass-mosaic tile was used to line the interior of the pool as well as to finish a sunken tanning platform, while flamed, black-granite coping and terrace borders were used to co-ordinate the installation with various features of the house.

To accommodate the vanishing edge and emphasize the view from all rooms on the main floor of the home, sections of the pool were raised, which enabled the installation of multi-level sitting areas, including a lower-sitting bar area with a 2.4-m (8-ft) linear fire trough, outdoor kitchen and barbecue, and another space with bench seating and a 1.2-m (4-ft) linear fire trough.

Finally, a large portion of the bush-hammered limestone patio, which leads to the pool from the home, was built around the installation of a 6-m (20-ft) bi-folding wall that allows the living room of the home and pool deck to become one giant area.
