Riverdale Park in Cornwall could be home to new splash pad

Riverdale Park in Cornwall, Ont., could see a new splash pad built this summer if city councillors’ plans to borrow money over a five-year period is approved.

According to a report in the Cornwall Seaway News, the splash pad would cost $350,000 with city council borrowing $75,000 per annum. The idea for the splash pad came about as a way for the city to make good with residents requests to install an aquatic amenity at the park after the swimming pool was removed a couple of years ago.

City Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy says construction of the splash pad should move ahead.

“A new council has not followed through. And I do believe, based on the fact that it was promised, and that the park is one of the most utilized parks in the city of Cornwall, it’s a good use of public funds,” he said in the report.

Should construction begin this year, there is a chance it would open late this summer, but residents may have to wait until summer 2017 before they can use the new aquatic feature.

Before planning/construction can be approved, however, a budget committee decision will require all council members to be on board.
