An investigation by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has revealed some certified pool/spa drains may not comply with the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act (P&SS Act), due to improper testing protocols used by some laboratories.
As part of the inquest, the CPSC issued subpoenas to three of the laboratories involved in the investigation to seek information related to the types of covers tested, their procedures and the results.
In return, the CPSC received more than 17,000 pages of documents from the laboratories, which agency staff continue to analyze. As a result, the commission plans to convene a public meeting on April 5, 2011, to solicit answers from testing laboratories, drain cover manufacturers and other industry representatives regarding how the testing was conducted, the potential impact on consumer safety and changes being made to testing procedures. The CPSC hopes to identify drain covers with improper ratings and provide safety information to the public by May 30.
Gravity drainage systems and large, unblockable drain covers are not part of this investigation.
