Splash pads remain popular in Ontario as they provide a convenient way for people of all ages and abilities to enjoy the outdoors and stay active during the summer.

Three Ontario communities are celebrating as splash pad projects in Sudbury and Kincardine are either open or set to open, while construction on another in Penetanguishene has been given the green light.

Victory Park Playground in Sudbury, Ont., officially opened its new splash pad in a recent ceremony which recognized the contribution of the City of Greater Sudbury, the Ontario Trillium Foundation, DEWCAN, the Loyal Order of Moose Sudbury Lodge 230, and the local community.

According to a Sudbury Northern Life report, the objective was to enhance the current park to promote inclusion and to provide a safe and accessible space for residents of all ages and abilities to enjoy.

“The splash pad will give children in our community a terrific opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and stay active in the summer heat,” said Greater Sudbury MPP Glenn Thibeault in the report.

As one park opens, another is readying a soft launch on June 27. According to a Kincardine News report, organizers planned to open the Kincardine Lions Club splash pad earlier; however, poor weather delayed construction.

Although the Lions Club has raised enough money to complete the splash pad and its various features, it is still seeking approximately $75,000 to complete an adjacent picnic shelter, as well as add change rooms, and washrooms.

Finally, construction of a 1022-m2 (11,000-sf) splash pad at Penetanguishene, Ont.’s Rotary Park has been approved with town council aiming to complete the project by the August long weekend.

According to a Midland Mirror report, the waterfront splash pad will cost between $250,000 and $300,000, and will come out of the town’s 2015 budget. Although a theme for the splash pad has not been determined, current plans for the water attraction include 17 play features and five spurt sites.
