Grade 2 and 3 students from Spruce Glen Public School in Huntsville, Ont., met with town councillors on June 24 to present their idea for the installation of a new community splash pad.
According to a report in CottageCountryNow.ca, the students had just finished a language arts unit in school on persuasive writing, and the meeting with town council provided the perfect opportunity to put what they had just studied to the test.
At the meeting, students wore bathing suits and had their towels in hand as each presented various points as to why the town should consider the splash pad idea. Their arguments included everything from increasing tourism and conserving water by not having to run sprinklers at home to expanding social recreational opportunities and raising money by way of donations.
“This is a topic that they (students) are very passionate and excited about,” said the children’s teacher, Jeneane Doughty, in the report.
The town’s Deputy Mayor Scott Aitchison supports the concept and has requested town staff to investigate the idea further.
