Swimming Lesson Five[1]
A Winnipeg learn-to-swim program pairs volunteer swim coaches one-on-one with special needs children to focus on individual abilities and requirements.

A Winnipeg learn-to-swim program, which provides individual instructors for kids with learning and physical disabilities, continues to grow—from 10 kids in 2011 to more than 120 this year.

Held at the city’s Seven Oaks Pool, the program, called Making Waves, provides volunteer swim coaches for one-on-one instruction for each student.

“There’s a lot of things that can go together in a lesson,” Cameron Krisko, president and founder of Making Waves Winnipeg, told Global News. “It can’t all be formalized instruction either. There’s got to be some time for fun, some time for great games.”

Each lesson is designed to meet each specific student’s needs and abilities. In addition to learning this important life skill, some students, depending on age and ability, also develop other skills such as independence as some families allow their children to prepare for their day at the pool on their own, whereby getting their stuff ready at home along with changing and showering at the facility.
