A tentative deal between the City of Toronto and the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) could see all 33 of the board’s city-funded pools remain open until 2017.

Depending on next month’s decision by city council, an agreement between the City of Toronto and the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) could see all 33 of the board’s city-funded pools remain open for at least another five years.

According to a report in the Toronto Star, the school board would trim this year’s city fees to use the pools during non-school hours by $285,316, to $5.92 million. After which, fees would increase by 1.6 per cent each year.

Janie Romoff, the city’s director of recreation, told The Star the TDSB performed an analysis of operating costs, found utility and other operational savings, and would pass them on to the city.

“It was a very successful negotiation between the two parties,” she added.

If approved by city council on May 8, the agreement would also see each party provide longer notice periods of any change in the number of pools used, and the city would get additional access to some of the pools during school holiday periods.
