The Toronto District School Board’s (TDSB’s) 33 city-funded pools will remain open after an agreement with the City of Toronto was officially ratified earlier this month.
According to a report in the Toronto Star, the city discussed the possibility of pool closures as a way to balance its budget; however, the five-year deal reached with the school board will see the city’s costs to use the pools during non-school hours decrease by $285,316, to $5.92 million, with 1.6 per cent annual increases.
“The goodwill, co-operation and creativity is very exciting… and the momentum for swimming will just grow, as will the commitment to making these viable, tremendous assets in every community,” councillor Paula Fletcher told The Star.
The deal between city council and the TDSB was originally announced in April. It was approved without amendment or debate on May 8 and runs from June 1, 2012 to June 30, 2017.
