The City of Toronto’s outdoor swimming pools, wading pools, and splash pads have officially opened for summer.

The City of Toronto has opened 55 of its 57 outdoor pools, which welcomed more than one million bathers last year.

Swimming pools, in addition to more than 100 wading pools, opened on June 26 and will continue to operate, weather permitting, with varying schedules until Sept. 6. According to the City of Toronto’s Parks, Forestry & Recreation department, the outdoor pool at Flagstaff Park (Etobicoke York) is scheduled to open on July 14, while the opening of Stanley Park South’s outdoor pool (Toronto & East York) will be announced at a later date.

Only four of the city’s 110 splash pads remain closed after they started to open in May. These water play features will remain open, weather permitting, until Sept. 20. The Amesbury Park (Etobicoke York) splash pad is expected to open this month, while those in Flemingdon Park, Hendon Park (North York), and Lakeshore Village Park (Etobicoke York) will remain closed for the season. The Hendon Park splash pad is scheduled to be replaced this fall, while plans are in place to renovate the Lakeshore Village Park spray pad in 2016.

“Our swimming lessons are affordable and outdoor pools are easily found in neighbourhood parks across the city,” says Councillor Jim Karygiannis who joined Barbara Byers, director of public education for the Lifesaving Society, to kickoff Toronto’s outdoor pool season. “We have 57 outdoor pools, 104 wading pools, and countless numbers of splash pads. It doesn’t matter how young or old you are, or where you live in the city, outdoor swimming is a great way to get outside, be active, and stay healthy during the summer.”
