The University of British Columbia’s (UBC’s) new $40 million aquatic centre opened on Jan. 23.

The University of British Columbia’s (UBC’s) $40 million aquatic facility opened on its new Point Grey campus this week.

Designed by architectural firms Acton Ostry and MacLennan Jaunkalns Miller, the aquatic facility, which includes recreational, competitive, and leisure pools, was built with sustainability and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification in mind[2].

According to a CBC News report, an underground 1.3 million litre holding tank will store rainwater from the roof to keep the pool topped up, and UBC’s District Energy System is used to heat the building, pool, and domestic hot water.

The multi-purpose facility offers a 50-m competition pool, which will be used by the UBC Thunderbirds for training purposes, and a recreational pool for the public. A 10-lane, 25-m pool is equipped with a springboard and a 4- to 6-m (13- to 19.5-ft) diving board. The pool is also equipped with accessibility ramps and lifts.

The facility can accommodate 966 bathers and 460 spectators in the mezzanine.

In other news, architects have been selected to design the new $61 million aquatic centre in Laval, Que.

In a report by CTV Montreal, a jury led by architect Matthew Lalla, Olympic diver Alexandre Despatie, and several other architects looked at 17 different designs before selecting the concept by the NFOE-HCMA consortium.

Similar to the UBC aquatic facility, the concept is for a Gold-Leed-certified building that will include three pools (two for swimming and one specifically for diving). The complex will accommodate 700 spectators with room for expansion.

Mayor Marc Demers told CTV Montreal construction is expected to start next year and be completed by July 2020.
