Toronto residents are frustrated with the Ontario Ministry of Health’s drain-and-fill guidelines for wading pools saying it reduces the amount of time the pools can be used.

The Ontario Ministry of Health’s drain-and-fill guidelines for wading pools has upset some Toronto residents looking to cool off in one of the city’s 40 shallow water vessels.

The guidelines, which were instated four years ago, call for wading pools, where water is not recirculated, to be drained every four hours; however, according to a CBC News report, pool goers say the constant draining and refilling means more waiting and less time in the water for children.

“Out of eight hours, there might be four hours where no children are allowed in the pool,” said public space advocate Jutta Mason in the report. “And we soon found out that this issue exists all over town.”

One parent even filed an access to information request with the city regarding health incidents caused by wading pools and found no outbreaks at any pools occurred over the last 20 years.

In response, Toronto Public Health’s Marco Vittiglio said: “We hope through these practices that waterborne diseases are minimized. That’s the whole intent of setting this standard.”
